Long day! Got up at 6:00 and ate breakfast and were on the road by 7:00. I thought I got up at 7:00. Must have been the hour time change because I wouldn't have purposely gotten up that early if I didn't have to go to work.
Rocky Mountain National Park was beautiful as you would expect. The weather was very nice. The lowest temp I ever saw on the car thermometer was 59. Traffic wasn't bad and I think we lucked out. They are resurfacing a major portion of Trail Ridge Road but weren't working on it today so NO DELAYS!!! Even parking at those scenic pull off sights wasn't too bad. I'm typing first and then adding pictures because we haven't eaten supper yet. I must be getting older because I definitely noticed more difficulty breathing in the upper altitudes. Went in a gift shop and really had trouble and it was better outside. Can't figure that out.
As usual on every vacation we take we find someone we know. We pulled off in one of those scenic places and the car next to us was from Jasper County. I told the husband, we're from Jasper County. (He looked like he could care less). But the wife said, "You're Jean Walker and that's Doc Walker". Great, of course, I didn't recognize her. It was Vickie Vroom from Prairie City. She went to school I thought she said with John and Mary Ellen was older. She also thinks she babysat my boys. I don't remember that.
We changed our plans a bit and did all of Trail Ridge Road coming out by Grandy. We thought, "we'll take I-70 back around to Estes Park". We never did figure out what the problem was but traffic was backed up and speed was 15-20 mph. After about 15-20 miles of that we got off and found a road that took us to Golden. That was actually pretty nice, still only about 40 mph but what roads aren't that in the mountain areas. There was a river running along side the road, lots of people, floating on it and six different tunnels to drive through. Drove through Boulder, home of the Colorado Buffalos, no longer Big 12 rivals.
We went to the trail head of the Colorado River. A Jimism.............I wonder if I took a spit in the river how long it would take to get to Lake Mead the the water supply in Los Angeles. Actually he said another word but after I typed that blogspot blocked it. LOL!
We haven't spent any money yet today so it's time to go eat supper. I'll finish this later.
In the one picture Jim is standing by a tree pole that are everywhever so snowplows will obvisouly know where to play. I thought maybe we might need one of these at home for our mail box next winter since it was lost in snow piles multiple times this year. This is Jim's first trip to Colorado since he was six years old. I commented about people walking out onto the snow piles to have there picture taken. I can't remember his exact words, but to put it in a nut shell "why would anyone want to do that, we had enough of that last winter." We didn't feel the need to take the touristy picture in the snow on the mountain.
I've included pictures of the obvious, Big Thompson Canyon River and some elk we saw in the park. I took a lot of pictures but I'll bore you with those after they are burned onto a dvd.
Oh, and I love the smell of pine. They have not created a candle yet that truly captures this aroma. This is where I'm in heaven (unlike the my husband's cattle feedlot).
Ate at a local establishment, The GrubSteak. It was good.
